LIFE FOR WHICH YOU ARE THE EXPLANATION

"I say to my child, I will explain to you as much of life as I can, but you must remember that there is a part of life for which you are the explanation." -- Robert Brault ---

Beautiful and true. Parents after giving the child his or her best.. can only do so much. The rest is up to the child or soon enough the adult. If the child now adult misbehaves or messes up his own life, do not be quick to blame it all on his parents even if they indeed have played a vital role in his formation.

Because every person is equipped with a free will and the exercise of it is solely his own responsibility and accountability. He decides his own fate or destiny as a grown-up -- as an individual person. He writes his own life. He now makes his own choices and decisions, good or bad. At times shortsightedly and foolishly disregarding even a parent's plea or the gentle nudge from the Heavens above to get back on track again if he loses his way. How can we stop this kind of self-destruction? We can't. We simply sit back and watch and earnestly pray. But.. as parents we will always be there when he needs us. It's who and what we are to our children. And our children will be who and what they will be..... by choice.

  1. Very true.Beyond a point it is the individual who shapes his or her life.Good parents have bad children and bad parents surprisingly get well behaved offsprings.Paraents can guide but cannot compel. They have a limited role as preceptors and no more

  2. I am a student of psychology and I completely agree with your post!! It is true that an individual's cognitions are largely determined by the way of parenting in the formative yrs of his/her life and a person's behaviour is mostly determined by the environment one is brought up in - but this is only as per the Behaviourist School of Though :)
There is another school - Cognitive-Behaviourist - which talks about an individual's own set of schemas or 'free will' that determine why is it that one makes the choices one makes....
Now it depends on ppl - what they wish to believe in :D
    1. whether they want to feel human beings are machines whose future is entirely shaped by the environment they are living in
    OR
    2. human beings are smarter and can exercise their own free will upon the choices available :)

  4. Hi Sapphire! Wonderful to know that you are a psychology student. Best of luck in your studies.

Ah two schools of thought. Interesting and both true. Might it not be too that in many cases people combine the two in living out their lives? That despite knowing how their environment shapes their lives in some way... still believe that they can influence change with the exercise of the free will in making the right corresponding choices?

Thanks for sharing. In fact, I hope that you could find time to come often so that we could chat and share ideas-observations 'bout life, people, living. 'Would be so nice! :-)

Take care. God bless you and your family.

  5. I agree, totally. Our basic value system is perhaps ingrained in us by our parents, upbringing and influences, as we grow up. Beyond that, it's each individual's free will that acts!

  8. Hi Sana! How true. In the formative stages of a child's life, the parents do their best to shape or mold the child with their own acquired values. In adulthood, these same values are often refuted - challenged - ignored - replaced ... with ones which the child now grown-up has probably gained or learned for himself through the tools of the free will. Looking at it now, parents are simply stewards of the child.. as the child in becoming an adult is truly a person in his own right. By God's design.

Indeed in great measure a person does indeed shape his own life or destiny. Wise is the person who aligns himself to that which is good and right.

It's a pleasure to be exchanging thoughts with you. Am looking forward to even more like this. Take care and God bless.
