GROW WHEREVER YOU ARE WITH WHO YOU ARE

It is quite easy to be content with what you have become and with your own stack of experience or knowledge. And even easier to boldly think that you know everything there is to know and that nothing else will and can surprise you now. Maybe -- or maybe not. But I think it's not how far you or we have gone up the ladder of knowledge or fame or stature that makes the real score. Not really. Because I have seen men of high position, wealth, or education make big and bigger fools of themselves with something or someone lesser than themselves. Not so much of why but rather of how they did that to themselves.

----- How often do we hear of an unknown inconsequential person steal the thunder from a much more famed intellentual or personality by the sheer strength of his argument or presentation? And that isn't because he had more talent or was much more brilliant than the other. It was imply because this insignificant person did his homework, studied harder, and was determined to learn all there was to learn and more about the subject in question. He apparently didn't stop where others already have. He wasn't contented with what he had, no matter how sufficient it may appear to be, and doggedly strove or explored more ways to make it even better if not the best. His goal may not be perfection but definitely he aimed for excellence. By the way, somebody once told me that perfection is a dead-end, meaning no growth. No more.

----- In contrast to that, we see our man of stature stopping where he was made content by his achievements or personal gain.

----- To sum it up, our inconsequential hero continued to grow where our famed intellectual stood smugly on status quo. So it isn't very hard to see that growth, wherever and whoever you are in your life with whatever you have, will undoubtedly take you quicker to your goal and win you the coveted prize. You see, it's not really what you have accumulated in your head or how big and full your pockebook is, or of the absence of one or the other or both. Nope. Rather what defines you is whether you continue to grow regardless of your situation or circumstance. Then by this you become unstoppable. And that is how man made his first flight to the moon - discovered new horizons - broke sound barriers - created new wonder drugs - or rose from rags to riches where it was once thought to be impossible.

----- "It matters little where a man may be at this moment; the point is whether he is growing." - George MacDonald

DON'T WE NEED A LITTLE MAGIC IN OUR LIVES

The other day I heard someone say that life was 'boring - boring - boring!'. Yeah, he said that three times. And he was right inside the mall with all possible distractions that could take a person's mind off cares and woes even if it be for just a few hours. Well, so what makes for 'boring'? I could venture a few descriptons, like --- absence of activity, lack of interest, dearth of inspiration, scarcity of surprises, or decline of hope and belief in life and living. Everybody has his own reason, I am sure, but valid or not it still is no excuse for giving up on feeling alive.

Alive - that is the one big word that explains everything and anything there is in our life. Anything means the good, the bad, the sorry, and the glad -- and everything else in between all that. It includes all the people you meet - the goodies and the baddies and yah some in-betweens too.

And yet despite a ful plate we still get to be bored. Why is that?

It's because.. we lost something somewhere back there.

I think what we need is to gain it back -- that special something we once had or were when we knew how to --- marvel, be in awe, feel the stars in our eyes, laugh with gless at a big surprise, feel the adrenalin rush in our veins, feel our steps quicken, or hear the warm thumpity-thump of our heart for someone or something.

It's something you can't fully explain but I think you don't need to anyway. it's enough that it brings the sparkle in your eyes, puts a gorgeous smile on your face, makes you feel up there on cloud 9, or walk about with a song in your head and heart -- or maybe sing in the rain. It's this wonderful joyous sense of living.

It's magic!

And everybody needs a little, and more if you can, MAGIC in their lives. So get back the magic into your life. See life and the world as --- magic and magical. You can if you try. It's all up to you. Don't lose that little kid inside. :-)

INFO FOR MY BLOG FRIENDS

Hi guys!

Do you know where I am? Am here in a net cafe. :-) Why? Because the communication and power lines in my neighborhood are out of commission at this time. So for the past three days I did nothing but think of you fellas, listen to music, do my morning walks with my daughter, play with my dogs and cat, and do some more sketches. :-) But I sorely miss meeting you all in the blog.

Well, am hoping that the repair guys will fix the problems very soon or tomorrow (Wish!) so that I can go back to posting again. Fact is, I have already a couple of new pieces for posting. And maybe will be adding more until things are back to normal again.

By the way, I love your warm and lovely messages in my previous post. Gosh, it feels good to know that you're there. As I've always said.. a blog comes alive when people come visiting it. And that's what you do to my blog .... it pulsates with life with your presence. You simple light it up, fellas. Thank you very much.

Got to go now. My online time is up. Geeezz, I thought I'd never go back to a net cafe again when I had the internet service installed at home. Oh well, never say never. Lols! :-)

Take care, everybody! Hope to see you soon.
Now don't you stop sending me your messages. Looking forward to more. Lols!
May God bless you and your family.

Ellen :-)

P.S.

Will be replying to your messages in the previous post on my next visit to this net cafe and that'll be soon. Take care all. Bye for a bit!

A GIFT TO MY BLOG FRIENDS

Hi Folks!

I was sitting at the computer one day last week and cruising down my blog archive. And honestly I was literally amazed by the Comments section and felt so overwhelmingly thankful for all the lovely, inspiring, warm, encouraging, and endearing comments and messages seen on every post written through the weeks, months, and years. Am so lucky and blessed to have such wonderful people visiting and viewing the blog. You made the blog so special and of course gave me my widest smile every time you dropped by. You bet! :-)

And so I thought I'm going to do something special for you, just for you my friends. The result of which is the above landscape sketch in charcoal pencil right off my sketch pad. :-)

Yes, this post is something different this time. Because this is a GIFT to all my wonderful FRIENDS in the blog, old and new, visible and invisible.

To your heart -- from mine.
God bless you all!

Ellen

"HOW DID YOU KNOW"

It was long ago when I first heard this song and fell straight in love with it. It was lovely then and still is today, amazingly. I was browsing the YouTube site when I stumbled upon it. Now I'm having it here on the blog to listen to anytime I please. See the lyrics below and know why, so here it is...

HOW DID YOU KNOW --- sang by Gary Valenciano
(source: YouTube)
Right click with your mouse on 'Open Link In New Window', so you need not leave the blog page. (Oh but of course, you know that already. LOLS!) :-)

HOW DID YOU KNOW

I remember so well
The day that you came
Into my life
You ask for my name
You have the most beautiful smile
My life started to change
I'd wake up each day
Feeling all right
With you right by my side
Make me feel things
Will work out just fine

CHORUS:
How did you know
I needed someone like you in my life
That there was an empty space in my heart
You came at the right time in my life
I'll never forget how you brought the sun to shine in my life
And took all the worries and fears that i have.
I guess what I'm really trying to say
It's not everyday that someone like you comes my way
No words can express how much i love you
(repeat chorus)

It's DO or DO NOT

Have you been through this situation -- when you come up to something so hugely confusing and mind boggling that it leaves you stunned not knowing what to do. Then suddenly something kicks you from behind and makes you say ‘Okay I’m going to DO this. No wait, I should NOT do that!’ Well, I hope that you stood your ground whatever it was you chose. You can’t backtrack if you chose the wrong one. But then as the old folks would say -- ‘one step backward for two steps forward’ – have hope.

Anyway, let’s look at these things which I have had the wonderful privilege to, see, hear, or observe. It’s also about ‘doing’ and ‘not doing’ something.

- Do make up your bed before going down to breakfast. Do not expect your mother to pick up after you every time.

- Do put on your cheeriest smile before coming into the office. Do not bring your problems to the office or vice versa. Leave problems behind.

- Do give your seat to the elderly or the handicapped on the bus. Do not expect courtesy when you don’t know how to give one yourself. Remember that people around you mirror you, good or bad.

- Do stop awhile to smell the roses. Do not ignore Mother Nature’s display of awesome beauty meant for your pleasure and enjoyment.

- Do give your job the best you’ve got. Do not regard work as the only thing there is in life. You simply are half alive if you do.

- Do humbly think of yourself as God’s special creation. Do not regard yourself as so special that anything or nobody else matters. Not even God. Because people know that isn’t true.

- Do respect all people regardless. Do not believe that your color, education, riches, talents, culture, or religion is the best. It’s what you are and not what you have or born with that people acknowledge and respect and admire.

- Do be honest, truthful, and sincere in your dealings with everyone. Do not make the other person look bad or make him feel inadequate or lead him to hate himself. How would you feel if you were in his shoes?

- Do stick to your values. Do not follow the fad or trend just to be in with the popular crowd. It’s the good man who’ll be the last man standing when everyone else have fallen to the ground.

- Do live in the present. Do not heap on all your hopes and dreams in your tomorrows. You can also do them today.

There you go. There's more of course. Say maybe you can add up with some yourself. But I have to end up here for now because I see a lovely morning outside my window and I sure would love a piece of that sunshine and that gorgeous breeze. See yah! :-)

ODE TO A TREE

The cool wind soothing my senses, tired and weary

The skies a blanket of azure beauty spread out above me

I lounge in peace with a carpet of green at my feet

As the lilting song of birds lull me to heaven and sleep

I look forward to awaken in the new morn

Appreciating what I was and have become with the dawn

NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE SPIRIT OF MAN

There lies in the heart a real but silent wish that one day we would meet or have beside us our super hero, big brother, guru, life coach, inspiration, or mentor. Somebody who would give us that push when we need it, explain things to clear our muddled brains, beat us to the ground when we act like jerks, take the bigger brunt of mean criticisms thrown upon us, defend us when we're unfairly pushed to the wall, and tell us we're still okay even if we messed up big time.

Well, sometimes we find that person - and we become our better selves because of him. He becomes in our life the proverbial ‘wind beneath our wings’ ... (to quote Bette Midler's song). We soar to greater heights, master the intricacies of the game and come out champion, unveil abilities and talents we thought never existed within ourselves. We are transformed to a better version of our selves and applauded, celebrated, copied, idolized, fantasized, and adored. And all because of this one person who took time to make us see our good and our best and helped us work it towards a big or bigger dream.

But sometimes... we do not find that special person.

So then here we stand alone feeling so small gathering up our own might-be-feeble strengths, energies, abilities, resources trying with all our might to leap over that huge hurdle or break down that menacing wall which resolutely separates us from our goal. We face up to the enemy of disappointment, frustration, and failure with a hard learned one-two-three punch. Sometimes we win, sometimes we don't. We fall many times, get up and stagger, far more confused and muddled than we were when we started. Then something happens taking us off the track and soon enough we begin to lose sight of our goal.

And yet …

Maybe nobody is or would be there for him... but certainly he is there for himself. Never ever underestimate the spirit of man.

"I was thinking one day and I realized that if I had somebody behind me all the way to motivate me, I could make a big difference. Nobody came along like that, so I just became that person for myself." -Unknown

DEVI'S PEARL (A short story)

Devi sat on the shoulder of the gravel walk with legs dangling nonchalantly over the ledge. The promontory was just a couple of yards high from the main park below. The park almost deserted now as people hurried to get home. Brushing away sweat from her eyes, she looked out to the far horizon now dotted with gray clouds. Far out to the right much heavier clouds gathered threatening rain. 'I have to head back soon, too' she thought. Yeah, it was rather late in the afternoon for a walk usually done early mornings… but no reason this time, none convincing enough anyhow, shrugged Devi picking herself up.

Shaking off imaginary dust from her pants, she started walking back up the path. It was a short trek to the main road but the park designers put in a rough gravel walk winding around trees that gradually thinned out when it got to the big gate. Doesn’t make walking easy, she mused. She thought, oh yeah, mom would always say life is not easy. She got this so wired into my head even before i could set eyes on goals and even before i could set foot on that journey pushing those dreams. When I finally left home to seek my own fortune, it was then that I came face to face with the ‘not easy’ stuff —because there it all was before me --disappointments, bum situations, hard knocks, and jerks. In turn I got bruised, torn, and shaken all over. How often did I cry “enough!!” – and frantically hit the panic button with a thousand screws askew --and burned wires sticking out of my frazzled brain. Geezz…So this is what mom meant!

Devi halted, steps faltered her heart grew heavy as thoughts flashbacked through the years. Feeling a heavy lump in her throat and eyes going moist, she uttered 'scars take long to heal alright'. She lifted her eyes, released the sigh and blinked away the tears. Yes when you have had a life like mine, you'll know everything revolves around – pain and struggle. It’s the fierce battle for relief that hits the button to push harder. No other way to do it-- and when all that doesn’t work still, then you also cry harder and hurt even so much more.

Cold winds started whipping up leaves on the park grounds. Hair wildly flapping in the wind, she intuitively looked back to check on the cluster of dark clouds formed earlier. Now they were much darker and heavier heading in her direction. The sight jarred her thoughts back to the present; Devi now quickened her steps and hurried down the path till it brought her to the main gate. Finally out into the open, she quickly ran towards the waiting shed as heavy clouds broke into unrelenting rain.

Rain! 'Into each life some rain must fall' — not original but another piece from Mom’s list. She missed no chance to hammer that into my head—making sure I understood very well what she meant--- At fifteen?! Ugh! --When all that I had in mind was that cute boy next door-- Tall and lanky, thin lips always curling up into an eternal smile, and gorgeous blue eyes. Blue! Girls went gaga over him—never mind if he was a GI baby –somebody’s souvenir of a long gone ugly war. He was cute! But then I grew older and outgrew the boy (well, who doesn’t!) and yes the rains did come. In fact, it poured buckets-- I got fired from my second job, got kicked out of my flat, friends thinned out, was betrayed by a boyfriend, mom died and an only brother in that same year, dad joined them a few years after, and money dwindled all too soon.

Devi looked down to her soggy shoes as old forgotten memories continued its parade. Drenched, she thought still looking at her wet shoes-- nobody can stay unaffected by it— none can survive untouched by it all. Life makes sure of that and spares no one. We all get our share of pain—in different measure but it falls on everyone absolutely. We all get unmercifully drenched. Soaked wet down to our feet!

The rains still pounded on the pavement heavily without letup. 'Darn', she thought, peering through the thick curtain of rain, 'what’s taking the shuttle so long'. Distracted, she strained through the thick rain to the other side of the road down to a low-lying bush which caught her eye. Small and sitting squat on the ground, yet with its tiny lavender blooms bravely holding on to its stalk under the pounding rain. Amazing, she mused, and so pretty-- a ray of color, hope and courage on a bleak silver gray and heartless canvass-- So much like life, isn’t it? She mused.

Blooms! Take time to smell the roses. Yeah, it’s not original-- again I know, but Mom said this, too. She said that at one time in our life, there is that precious moment or one unforgettable person which and who will always stand out in one’s memory which is akin to the sight of beautiful red roses in gorgeous full bloom just taking one’s breath away-- always remembered, never ever forgotten!

I remember this one rose moment....

Who says that banners and streamers welcome you into the workplace-- that 24-karat smiles greet you on every floor the Sup takes you to meet the corporate family as they call it. Well, maybe one or two then there are the quick smiles, half smiles, quarter smiles, and no smiles. But I hate most the eternal smirk. Ugh! It cuts you up more like a double-edged sword. To a naïve just-fresh-out-of-school young girl of twenty-two, this is akin to the ugly withered witch in the dark cold deep forest who’s out to steal my basket of red apples. Did I get that all mixed up... was it snow white or little red riding hood? He-he. So the Sup and I got through all the floors and cubicles and then back to my first-ever corner desk when the clock struck lunch. Hurriedly, she mumbled where the canteen was and then melted into the woodwork. Must be related to Cindy—Cinderella if you want to know.

Anyway the room suddenly felt so desolate as I stood there glued to my shoes. Panic! -- heart thumping I grabbed for my bag and ran to the ladies’ room. Empty! So glad for it heaving a sigh of relief. The place was impressively very clean. Maybe I could…??? So I got out from my bag the sandwich mom packed for me this morning, moved the stool at the make-up counter closer to the open window, sat down and ate my lunch. I was starving. A quarter off my sandwich when the door opened and a girl came in. She may have noticed the sandwich in my hand but said nothing. Instead, she said “Hi!” --showing a nice set of pearly white teeth. She washed, dried her hands, and then looked in the mirror checking her make-up. I remained quiet so embarrassed because she obviously knew what I was doing there. Then she turned to me and said “The view is truly fantastic from that window. New here?” and smiled. Not waiting for me to reply, she headed for the door and added “You’ll be fine; it's okay. It’s only that way for some few days. Then it'll get better.” Smiled again, opened the door and stepped out closing it softly behind her. Never saw her again but I never forgot her since. Although I was told that people in the big city rush and hurry all the time unmindful of each other, but not this one, she certainly took time for me. Will never ever forget her.

Oh but of course there's more-- snippets in the most unlikely places and situations although remotely connected to my own pain and suffering —yet providing so much immense wealth of pleasure and inspiration despite the restive ripples seen on the surface of life so to speak. So much like a pool of calm cool waters refreshing and resting my soul and spirit. I guess one just has to learn to seek out these treasures which almost always are hidden beneath the hassle-and-bustle of life’s endless grind and hard cover-- to see pearls where others may think none exist. And appreciate it! I guess this is what Mom meant.

The heavy downpour now had trickled to a light drizzle and Devi slid out of the shed deciding to walk home. The comforting thought of hot chocolate nudged her to quicken her steps. But for one brief moment, she looked back over her shoulder to the tiny plant -- lavender blooms still upright—and Devi smiled. Ah yes, nature and people – brothers, too, in the same landscape of life. And grinning widely now, Devi whispered to the wind “Mom, I found myself another pearl!”.

I don't usually do long stories. Did this for a friend. But this will be the first and last. Lols! Hope you enjoyed this special ride. Thanks for dropping by for this one.
